Three Fun and Easy Popcorn Recipes for Family Movie Night

Popcorn is an absolute necessity for movie night in our home! It is versatile, inexpensive, and fun to eat for all ages. The flavors can be adapted to any pallet preference. That is why we put a movie on for the whole family and sit down for some good ole fashion popped corn!

However, there are two different people when it comes to the etiquette of eating popcorn. The first is my wife, she will pick a piece or two, examine it, and then throw it into her mouth at a rate of about 8 pieces a minute. Its cute, polite, and would respectfully be the better technique when it comes to teaching our children how to behave in public.

The second, which is the correct way, is to bury your hand into the bowl and obtain the greatest number of pieces, ever so delicately, and attempt to shove it into your gullet without letting one-piece fall or having to divert your eyes from the movie. Some call it being feral or savage, I call it talent.

To share or not to share is the question? My wife- she reaches for her own bowl on this one!

I induce popcorn eating anxiety, so to save my wife from this, she reaches for a separate bowl of popcorn. She cannot keep up with my skill of consumption, same goes for French fries, and in the end opts to get her own as to not have to be put in that position of frustration and amazement. It is glorious and, in all reality, that is what true love is all about, knowing when to share your food or when to order you own.

Our recipes are all about you and your family making it your own, sharing life with one another, so that you can be brought back to the table (or the blanket fort on this one)!

Three Fun and Easy Popcorn Recipes for Family Movie Night

Servings: You decide Time: 15min Difficulty: easy

Three simple varieties for your movie night popcorn: Spicy, cheesy, and sweet!

1/4 cup of refined coconut oil

3/4 cup of popcorn kernels

3 tbsp of unsalted butter

3/4 tsp sea salt, fine

Variations - per 7 cups of cooked popcorn

Spicy

1-2 tsp of Tabasco

1/2 of a lime, juice

Cheesy

2 tbsp of nutritional yeast

Sweet

1/4 tsp of cinnamon

1 tbsp of sugar

  1. Heat up a soup pot (we use an 8 qt) on medium heat with ¼ cup of refined coconut oil. Add five kernels of popcorn scattered around the base of the pan and cover with lid.

  2. Wait until ALL five kernels have popped, this will let you know that your oil is hot and ready for the rest of the kernels. This takes us roughly 2 minutes. Do not step away or you will risk burning it.

  3. Do not turn the burner off just remove the pot off the burner and add in your popcorn kernels. SWIRL the pot so that the kernels all get covered in oil. You should have a single layer of popcorn kernels at the bottom. Cover and let it sit (off the burner still) for 45-60 seconds.

  4. Put the pot back onto the burner. Crack the lid just a small bit to release some steam but not enough for a kernel to pop out because they will be extremely hot. They will start popping rapidly and once you start hearing the pops slow down to about every 5-6 seconds, they are done (this took us about 1 ½ minutes).

  5. Remove it from the heat but keep the lid cracked and wait for any last kernels to pop then empty the popcorn out into a bowl (you can split up the popcorn at this point if you want to make different variations).

  6. Take 3 tbsp of butter and put it into the empty pot to melt, making sure it is off the burner. Once melted, pour atop your popcorn, toss and then add your toppings. Toss again and serve immediately.

*Use 1/4 tsp of salt for every 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels.

*1/4 cup of popcorn kernels will make 7 cups of popped popcorn.

*This recipe makes 21 cups of popped popcorn.
